Recovering From A Business Failure 

I did have some trepidation to get over while going down the entrepreneur path. And some days I still deal with it. It wasn’t the general riskiness of getting into my own business. It was getting over the disappointment of a previous entrepreneurial attempt that went sour.

About 20 years ago, I left a large consulting firm to move across country and start a business as an independent consultant. I was very excited, especially when 3 consulting contracts came forward the first week I was in business. This is another example of the Universe and the Law of Attraction making a step toward me as I took a risk in a new venture.

A former employer encouraged me to accept a long term contract with them. I would support their West Coast customers and business partners, and I was relieved to have the long-term work. It provided a consistent paycheck for both me and my then husband.

Company X was happy with my work and supported me for several years. But I became complacent and didn’t spend much time creating other business relationships that would support my business. I made excuses. I was too tired from working, I’d do it later, etc., but basically I was scared and didn’t know anything about sales, marketing, networking, or creating opportunities. I was a good worker bee, but didn’t take ownership of my business and run it like a CEO.

One day, company X disappeared. My contact no longer answered my phone calls or my emails. And my entire income dried up.

I was scared. I tried to get work as a part-time consultant, but the economy was in difficult shape and jobs were scarce.

At my all-time low, I got a job as an executive assistant at a consulting firm. I worked hard, proved myself, and became longtime friends with the women who hired me. That job started my next 10 years in full time jobs, where I continued to prove myself, build my income and security.

Those 11 years in my own business taught me a lot, and scared me a lot when it came to an end. I thought I’d failed not just in business, but had failed myself.

But I am in a different place now where I’m truly ready to be a successful entrepreneur and face those things that scare me. There’s more at stake now, but I like many of my fellow entrepreneurs of a certain age, am ready to take the plunge.

Motivation Inspiration And Time Management 

I think my first venture into motivational tapes (yes, tapes) was in the mid-1990’s when I bought a 30 day cassette tape system from a well known motivational speaker’s infomercial. I think I used it for 30 days with great success and moved on because I didn’t know where to go next.

That coach was Tony Robbins, who is some kind of miracle of nature. He went from rags to riches, and took a few million people across the globe on that journey as well.

In March 2013, I was desperate for some kind of motivation. I started listening to TED talk videos, (http://www.ted.com) , go there!). When I arrived at that site, I found a Tony video there that inspired me. I began to remember how energetic, and enthusiastic he is and I was hooked. I wanted more.

I think I listened to every Tony video on the web, usually while taking a shower and getting ready for work. I was enamored, but I also had more joy and energy in my life. I was on his website every day, and signed up for his mailing list.

I received a promotional video from a venture he had with Cloe Madanes , a quite lovely and well-known family and marriage counselor (http://www.cloemadanes.com) . Tony and Cloe developed a program called Strategic Intervention coaching, and the results of this program are truly amazing. (http://www.rmtcenter.com).

I was hooked and joined the program, and became a certified Strategic Intervention Coach. I now consider it part of my toolkit of working with others. It’s based on the theory of the six human needs which we all have and utilize, which are Certainty, Uncertainty, Significance, Love & Connection, Growth & Learning, and Contribution.

Despite the tools I learned and valued, I also learned something else. Over the course of 4 months, I put in over a hundred hours of learning, studying, and practicing with other students.

100 hours.

I amazed myself. How did I ever find the time to do that?

It turns out I found time in my busy schedule to do something important to me even when I thought I had no time. I later went on to work with a certified Tony Robbins coach who helped me reach some personal goals, and along the way I purchased some of his products. By far the most valuable product with his time life management system, a time management system that got me to look at how I use my time, resources, and rearrange them in a new way that supported my priorities. https://www.tonyrobbins.com/products/time-life-management/time-of-your-life/ His system far exceeded other well known systems I learned, but this was the only one that helped me to organize my world and priorities so I could sleep at night.

Tony Robbins’ content is phenomenal, and there are resources available for every level you want to participate so everyone can take advantage of it to some level. But more importantly, I discovered something I didn’t know I needed.

I needed a teacher and a mentor.

I started by just being attracted to his work, but like working with any good mentor, I was challenged to look at and do things differently to move me to a new place in life.

I discovered that if to get to a new place, like being an entrepreneur for the first time, you can’t keep doing the same things over and over. You have to do things differently. So I learned a great lesson and that I need mentorship and I needed to reach out to find those who could support my growth in a new direction, even though I didn’t know what direction that growth would take me.

The new path you go down will take time, strategy, dedication, and energy, but can absolutely be worth the effort.

Entrepreneur And The Law Of Attraction 

I was at an event where a wannabe entrepreneur was starting to realize the time and effort necessary to get her business off the ground. She told me she only believed she should be doing things that come easily to her, and that is how she would become financially abundant.

I am very familiar with this philosophy – it’s called the Law of Attraction. It says that that which is alike attracts to one another. So if you think, believe, and act in a positive and abundant manner, abundance will come to you. If you think and act negatively, negative things will come to you. Like attracts Like.

I do believe in that philosophy, to a point. I know for myself that when using the Law of Attraction, the more steps you take to your goal, the more the Universe will reach out to you and open doors for you. I’ve experienced that too, where the more steps I take and people I connect with, the more opportunities become available for me to choose from.

This happened to me, when I decided to go down entrepreneur path. A mentor came forward, and a support system of people going down the same path appeared. A second mentor came forward, brought me new information that I never heard of, and allowed me to take more steps.

I think about the Law of Attraction and I know it works. But it is a 50-50 deal. You have to put in the time and footwork. The Universe won’t automatically drop a custom-made business card in your lap because you wished it to happen. A web designer doesn’t show up at your door with a mobile response, SEO optimized website with custom copywriting unless you take action on your part.

You have to do the footwork. And it takes time and effort.

I’ve invested time, money, and effort to get this far. It didn’t just come to me. I thoroughly believe in trust that doors will open for me, but I want LOTS of doors to open for me not just a few. That’s why I spend about 10-15 hours or more a week on MY business, in addition to my day job and other commitments. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it, and lets the Law of Attraction to work through me and what I want to have in my life.

The more effort you put into something, the more the Universe can work through you and for you. So keep the positive mindset and great things will happen to you. But don’t be afraid or unwilling to put in the work that will take you far, and attract you toward your goal of abundance creativity and being the best entrepreneur you can be.

An Audience Of A Certain Age 

After 5 months on my entrepreneur adventure with Debbie Allen, she sent me an email saying I had been nominated for her Rising Star Award. Could I come to her next Highly Paid Expert event in Los Angeles?

How could I resist? I would be an award-winning business owner and I’ve barely gotten off the ground. But I was thankful for all she done for me and very proud of the work I’d done, so I accepted.

The event was fantastic. It gave me a chance to see how far I’d in come in 9 months, and I’d get to share it with the audience on the third day of the event. I looked around at the room and saw familiar faces of those who had been at the last event and gotten their businesses off the ground. There were also amazing testimonials of how their lives and businesses had grown and changed since they had adopted this new Highly Paid Expert business model.

Many of these new attendees approached me, asking me to clarify the outcomes of the program, and I was happy to oblige. But I noticed something as I looked around the room. About 90% of the attendees were aged 50 to 75, looking for what to do with the next chapter of their lives. I highly identified with them, being of that age also.

I listened to their stories. Several were facing a new chapter in their lives after having been through a difficult illness and wanted to share their stories and educate others. But there were those who, like me, were in corporate careers or would soon hit the end of their ability to advance in their field. Their knowledge, experience, and wisdom were not recognized by their employers, nor would they continue to be financially rewarded.

As Debbie presented my award, she asked me what had changed for me. As I looked into the audience, I saw all those people, like me, who were at a turning point in their lives.

I shared that I had hit the Concrete Glass Ceiling, and being an entrepreneur gave me the chance to be a success in my own right, and explore options not available in a corporate career.

As I said those words, I saw people in the audience begin to cry or have quivering lips. Afterwards, they came up to me, thanking me, identifying with me, having stories of their own of the scary times they were experiencing.

The outpouring was enormous, and I knew I had found my audience. Those like me. Those people who were a little older, a little wiser, and still had a lot to give, and were determined to share their expertise with the world.
